Dental knowledge: gingival recession
If periodontitis goes untreated the inflammatory process advances and bony defects develop.
If periodontitis goes untreated, the inflammatory process advances further and after a time reaches deeper regions of the tooth root. Bony defects develop, mostly funnel-shaped and found in the interdental areas. The largely inflammation-free recession of the gum and the bone beneath it is known in periodontology as a recession defect.
There are also conditions in which the gum and the underlying bone recede without any previous inflammation. The reasons can be many: incorrect brushing, misaligned teeth or grinding are common causes. Receding gums are not only an aesthetic problem for the person affected; exposed tooth necks and sensitivity can also cause pain.
