Teeth in a day – what lies behind it
Immediate loading explained: what happens on that one day, why the temporary is not the final restoration, when the procedure is not possible and what the advertising for it usually leaves out.
“Teeth in a day” means this: the implants are placed and fitted with a fixed temporary restoration in the same session. What sits in the mouth that day can be used and can be seen – but it is not the final restoration. That comes once the implants have integrated, usually after a few months. The procedure is not possible for everyone: it requires sufficiently firm bone and planning that is complete before the procedure begins.
What happens on that one day
The day is the end of a preparation, not its beginning. Before it come the clinical findings, a three-dimensional image, the planning of the implant positions and usually a surgical guide. On the day itself the implants are placed, the abutments screwed on and the prefabricated restoration attached. Anyone arriving at midday leaves in the evening with fixed teeth – because the work happened beforehand.
Immediate loading: the technical term behind it
The procedure is called immediate loading. Normally an implant first integrates without load, because movement during the healing phase disturbs the bond with the bone. With immediate loading that rule is deliberately circumvented: several implants are rigidly connected to each other, so that no single one can move. That is why the procedure works better with several implants than with a single tooth – and why it is tied to conditions.
Fixed teeth on four implants
For a toothless jaw the best known design is the one on four implants: two placed straight at the front, two tilted at the back. The tilt gains hold in the bone that is there and often spares grafting in the posterior region. A bridge sits on top and carries the whole jaw. With six implants the construction becomes more stable and is easier to divide if something has to be replaced later.
- Toothless jaw with four tilted implants
- Toothless jaw with four to six implants
- Removable or screwed in place
What the temporary is – and what it is not
The restoration of the first day is fixed; you can speak with it and eat carefully. But it is built more lightly than the final result, usually from acrylic, and intended for the healing period. The definitive restoration follows, matched to the integrated implants. Anyone expecting treatment to be over after one day meets a disappointment that lies not with the treatment but with the advertising for it.
When it is not possible
The conditions are clearly named, and they are the reason the procedure is not the rule.
- the bone is too soft or too sparse to bear immediate loading
- an acute inflammation in the jaw
- untreated periodontitis
- heavy grinding at night without protection
- a single tooth in the posterior region, where chewing forces are greatest
- smoking and poorly controlled diabetes – not as a ban, but as an increased risk
Immediate placement is something else
Two terms are often confused. Immediate placement means the implant is put into the same socket straight after a tooth has been removed. Immediate loading means it is loaded with a restoration right away. The two can coincide but need not: an immediately placed implant can integrate quite normally without load.
What the advertising leaves out
Three things are missing from most advertisements for teeth in a day, and all three belong in the consultation.
- The one day is the day of surgery, not the duration of treatment; months pass before the final restoration.
- The price quoted is often that of the temporary, not of the definitive restoration.
- Whether the procedure is possible in your own case only emerges from the three-dimensional image.
Who offers the procedure
Teeth in a day call for planning, three-dimensional diagnostics and a laboratory that works alongside on the day. The directory on this portal lists practices with a focus on implantology – by location and qualification, without ranking and without rating.
