Dental knowledge: sports mouthguards
Why a sports mouthguard is important protection for your teeth.
A sports mouthguard is advisable for children, young people and anyone active in sport. A good many sports carry a considerable risk of injury to the lips, cheeks, tongue and teeth. Ninety-five per cent of all dental injuries happen before the age of 21.
A sports mouthguard is important protection against needless tooth loss, annoying injuries and fractured teeth – and not only for children and teenagers who are keen on inline skating or skateboarding. Adults, too, face a raised risk of such injuries in a wide range of sports.
The mouthguard is made in a dental laboratory from a special plastic, individually and to suit the sport, after the dentist has taken an impression. Because it is made of plastic, there are no limits to the imagination when it comes to choosing the colour.
