Ceramic implants: first international consensus meeting

Ceramic implants are no longer a niche product. The first international consensus meeting on zirconia implants took place in 2025 – a sign that the technique has left the experimental phase behind.

The conclusion: one-piece ceramic implants based on zirconia are, in the panel's assessment, mature enough for routine use and come into consideration as an alternative. The material used is mostly yttria-stabilised zirconium dioxide; the latest generation also contains small amounts of aluminium oxide, which increases flexural strength.

For patients this is of interest above all where they want no metal in the body, or where a dark margin at the gumline of a front tooth is to be avoided. Whether ceramic is the right choice in an individual case depends on the bone available and on loading, and belongs in the consultation.
